Buhari, world leaders pay tribute to Queen Elizabeth II

Leaders all over the world have been paying tributes to the late British Monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, the UK’s longest-serving monarch.

Queen Elizabeth II died on Thursday in Balmoral Castle at the age of 96.

World leaders have been paying tribute to the late British monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, who was the country’s longest-reigning head of state for 70 years.

President Muhammadu Buhari expressed deep sadness and condoled with the royal family in a statement issued late Thursday evening.

He said “My family and I, and the more than 200 million Nigerians have learned with immense sadness of the passing of the Queen and the end of her unique and wonderful 70 year reign. Her late Majesty was the only British Sovereign known to 90 percent of our population.

“Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with the Royal Family and the people of the United Kingdom and the entire Commonwealth as we join the entire world in mourning her loss.

“The story of modern Nigeria will never be complete without a chapter on Queen Elizabeth ll, a towering global personality and an outstanding leader. She dedicated her life to making her nation, the Commonwealth and the entire world a better place.”

He also welcomed Your Majesty’s ascension to the throne in line with tradition and prayed that King Charles the Third’s reign will witness the continuing robust and sisterly relations between our two nations.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in his tribute to the Queen, called her a good friend of the UN. He said the her unwavering, lifelong dedication to serving her people was worthy of note.

In a statement, U.S. President Joe Biden and his wife Jill Biden said Queen Elizabeth’s “legacy will loom large in the pages of British history, and in the story of our world.”

“In a world of constant change, she was a steadying presence and a source of comfort and pride for generations of Britons, including many who have never known their country without her,” they said.

In a message to King Charles III, the son who succeeded the throne, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Queen Elizabeth “rightfully enjoyed the love and respect of her subjects, as well as authority on the world stage.”

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II embodied the British nation’s continuity and unity for over 70 years. I remember her as a friend of France, a kind-hearted queen who has left a lasting impression on her country and her century.
